My book report is on the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. This book was published in 2008. This story occurs in the future.The story is told in first-person participant.
There are 2 chief characters in the story. They are: Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year old girl who does anything to feed her family and is chosen for the games; Peeta Mellark, a 16 year old boy that is the son of a baker, a stocky well feed kid that is chosen for the games.
The story begins with Katniss telling you about the day of the reaping. Explaining what it is all about. As the reaping starts Katniss has thought about her chance of being chosen and her sisters chance but she doubts her sister being chosen. When a lady (Effie Trinket) pulls the name for the girls Katniss is very surprised at the name that is pulled, her sister Primrose. Katniss is very shocked and sad, so she volunteers to take her place. Now it is the guys turn and the name that is chosen is Peeta Malark. After the reaping Katniss and Peeta get on a train and ride to the capitol. During the ride they interact with Haymitch (their mentor) and he helps them on surviving. When they get to the capitol they meet their stylist, Katniss' stylist Cinna is different from all of the people in the capitol. He designs Katniss' and Peeta's costume for the entrance of the tributes. after the entrance they had a interview and Peeta says that he had a crush on Katniss because he knows this will get him and her a chance in the games. After the interview they have to get some sleep because the games are the next day. When they wake up and eat they get ready for the games they have their tribute suits on and the are ready they say there last goodbyes to their stylist and Haymitch then they are raised up into the arena. After they wait 60 seconds the games have started. Katniss runs as far as possible, then the gamemakers sends her back by making a forest fire. She gets out of danger with only one burn then she set herself in a tree to rest. As the games go on she decides to kill some tributes with tracker jacker bees (venomous bees), only one dies and Katniss takes her weapons for her own. During that attempt she gets stung herself and she has hallucinations and she saw Peeta, he was saving her live from the other tributes. Then she became unconscious. She wakes up healed from her tracker jacker injuries because of the help of another tribute from district 11 named Rue. She and Rue became allies. They gathered food for each other slept by each other until days later Rue was killed. Later on in the games Claudius Templesmith ( a gamemaker ) announces that there can be two tributes instead of one but they have to be from the same district, then she starts looking for Peeta. She finds him and they find a cave to go to so she can try to heal his wound. While they are in the cave they are sparking up the whole "in love" thing. Once again Claudius speaks, he says that there will be a feast with things that the remaining tributes need to survive.Katniss says she is going, but Peeta doesn't want Katniss to risk her life for him. She drugs Peeta with sleeping syrup so she can go to the feast. She makes it back with a gash on her forehead, and after a while they are healed (not completely). There are now 5 tributes remaining after the feast, but after the next couple of days 2 more dies so it is only 3 more tributes left: Peeta; Katniss; and another tribute Cato. The gamemakers drive them together by placing vicious animals after them. Peeta and Katniss climb on top of a giant horn in the arena (the cornucopia). Cato is also up there and Peeta fights him and throws him off to be eaten by the animals. After 3 days he still doesn't die so Katniss shot him to put him out of his misery. Just then Claudius announces that the rules have been changed and there could be only one victor. Katniss decides if both of them dies there will not be a victor (and they can't have that) so they put some poison berries in their mouth. As soon as they do that Claudius yells stop and they spit the berries out, and he announces the there is two winner from district 12. Finally she wins the games with Peeta and they go and get replenished. Katniss and Peeta goes back to their home (District 12) wealthy and she thinking about when is the next time she could be with Peeta.
The author is being subjective in the story. For example in the book he make Peeta and Katniss lovers so they can get a lot of sympathy and help from the sponsors in the capitol.
This book only caused a few emotions in me. I felt exited when the reaping began till the finish. I was also made aware of the world when I found out that this is supposed to be this world in the future. The characters in this story seemed believable. I could not relate to them because I don't have the same abilities. This story has an enduring theme because it is very exiting.
